Undercroft -
Evilusion |
From the untapped metal world of Chile comes a pleasant surprise in the form of Undercroft. With three prior full-lengths (Twisted Souls, Bonebreaker, and Danza Macabra) under their belts, Undercroft travelled to Sweden to record with Daniel Bergstrand who is best known for his work with Meshuggah and Strapping Young Lad. The result is Evilusion, a heavy, crushing album which comes close to Slayer mixed with Napalm Death. Bergstrand brings his signature sharpness to Undercroft's sound, giving it a fresh makeover. Evilusion is not quite thrash, nor death metal, but it is clearly influenced by each. Musically, the heaviness and groove lend themselves to thrash, but Alvaro Lillo's vocals are more in the heavy death metal vein. Undercroft deliver a nice surprise with Evilusion, but I hope they aren't overlooked.
