Interview with vocalist and bassist Alvaro Lillo
Undercroft is an extreme metal band from Chile. Their brand of black/ thrashing/ death metal has been given a sharp edge due to the production of Daniel Bergstrand, the man behind albums by Meshuggah and Strapping Young Lad. Their three previous albums were solid, but their latest, Evilusion, is a killer disc. The following is an e-mail interview with frontman Alvaro Lillo. Due to language barriers I cleaned it up as much as possible, but it can be humorous anyway.
How do you feel about Evilusion?
Great work. We feel very comfortable about the last album. We had many problems flying to Europe to record this l.p., but our motivation was stronger than anything. This album has some personal experiences, for example we have one in Spanish, “Carros de Fuego”, this is a thing that we always wanted. The sound of the album was more natural than the others, more powerful, the music is still in line with the last work. We feel very good with everything about Evilusion.
What was it like working with Daniel Bergstrand?
He is a great guy, very professional and so crazy. He was a big help for us, in everything. The time in Dug Out Production was fantastic. He always tries to help in any way he can.
What makes Undercroft special compared to other metal bands?
The live shows, we show all of our power in the stage. We try to connect with the people thinking in that it’s the last show of our lives. We have blood, southern infernal blood.
What are you interested in besides music?
I´m interested in all metal music. For example if some black or doom band are good we listen it. Our favorite style is death metal. Metal from hell. We also like some classical music or somes soundtracks movies.
What are your thoughts on violence? Do you think television, movies, and music has contributed to violence?
All is violence. When you procreate this is violence, when you born this is violence, the life is violence, when you die this is violence. The t.v. shows real violence in the news, the music made you feel violence too. Playing bass this is a fucking violence. I want to contribute to violence.
Any final comments?
Thanks and we´ll try to come to many places in the world showing our black art, this is only thing we have- our fucking insane music. Undercroft have real metal blood inside the veins, like each one of you. Listen to our music and try to come to any gig and feel the hate and the southernmost fire. See you in hell.
